Buy A Tractor And Make Your Day: Fun Outdoor Activities Near I-91 In VT
You’re cruising along the interstate north of Hanover-White River Junction-Lebanon (VT-NH) and need a substantial break. A few fun outdoor activities near I-91 in VT, to be precise. Or, you’re staying in the area for a bit.
Time for a little adventure. An auction perhaps? Diner food? All kinds of local stretch-my-legs attractions, summer and winter?
Find Exit #15, and don’t breeze on by. There are big green signs for Fairlee. Are you ready? This is going to be quite a day…
Buy a Tractor
A cow? A flock of chickens?
There are two kinds of auctions in VT. The first is the kind that sells fancy antiques. They’re great if you like to hang out with folks who have big wallets and city addresses, but challenging for limited-budgeters. Who wants to be tempted?
The other kind
The second type of Vermont auction specializes in all things farming: tractors, pigs, chickens, wrecked skimobiles, battered ATV’s, old-fashioned kitchen stuff, and wonky chairs. These are treasures of the homely variety, and, to tell you the truth, these auctions are way more fun than the antique kind.
For fun outdoor activities near I-91 in VT, this one’s genuinely out there.
Unlikely. You might not be enthusiastic about squandering your limited budget on an aging tractor (though that would make quite the potluck story), but maybe you can go out on a limb and own a fractured garden urn? A chipped teacup, “Chip”pendale fancy in Vermont auctioneer parlance?
Go on over…
Okay, so how are you going to get to an auction like that? Fairlee is where you want to go, to Gray’s.
I-91 Exit 15.
You got that?
Go east at the exit, in the direction of the Connecticut River. Take a left at the T junction and go north for a little bit on Route 5. Gray’s Field comes up on the left.
Step right up…
Don’t be intimidated—this auction is “plaid shirt optional”—but puleeze, don’t wave a hand or you’ll be driving away with a decrepit curio cabinet.
You will not be a happy camper if you’ve picked the wrong day for this adventure, so be sure to check out Gray’s website for dates and times. Also verify the location in case the auction will be held at a farm. Prepare for an early start.
Get some lunch
Three suggestions. Idea #1. If offered, buy a coffee and something from the concession stand at the auction. Fresh homemade donuts can be a treat not to be missed. Idea #2. Fairlee Diner: check for hours. Idea #3 Take a side trip to East Thetford (7 miles south on Route 5 Vermont), and guzzle at Wicked Awesome BBQ.
If you want to keep going with your outdoor activities near I-91 and haven’t had enough exercise scampering around the auction field…
Give the lungs a workout
By driving over the bridge from Fairlee VT to Orford NH. There, you’ll find a spectacular row of 18th century mansions known as the “Ridge”. Traipse along the brick walkways, read the historic markers, imagine life in the spendy lane. Feel smug that you don’t have to pay for upkeep: there’s an upside to every limited budget.

No way? A drive-in movie?
Yeppers. Fairlee has one of those, too. Check : Ridges, Boots, And A Movie, All In A Day: Upper Valley VT-NH.
No, they don’t do farm auctions in blizzards, but as far as outdoor activities near I-91 in Vermont, this one’s world class. Fairlee has one of the longest speed skating tracks in the US. On Lake Morey, on the edge of town. It’s for everyone, it’s free, and you can rent nordic skates.
But maybe you’re in the market for some sturdy boots? You can choose from thousands of pairs, ‘cos you’re only 7 miles south of Farm-Way in Bradford, a mecca for footwear, and a perfect place to get yourself a new set of muckers.
