FREE Balloon Festival In Post Mills VT: Exit And Explore Near I-91
May? It’s time for the Post Mills Vermont Experimental Balloon Festival. Airships, too. Plan for an awesome evening or early morning: you’ll remember it forever. Sandwich a full day of local adventuring in between and you’ve got a serious day off from the grind…
Here’s why you gotta go…
This launch is not your run-of-the-mill standard variety balloon event: it’s all about experimental, creative, maybe-made-in-the-garage-or-backyard flying objects. And….about new and inventive—not to mention jury-rigged—ways to be a hot air balloon jockey.
Let your fancy fly…
Imagine seeing the world while suspended on a lawn chair. Straddling a propane tank. Paddling a canoe.
Odds are, you won’t get airborne yourself, but your spectating can-do is definitely in high demand. And maybe you’ll pitch in to help here and there or shell out some shekels for the fundraising-at-dawn pancake breakfast.
A balloon festival for FREE? Seriously?
Yeppers, free parking, free entry, free “local color”. Lots of it
That was May, right?

Before then, you may need to make a website visit (2016, but still current except for dates) to corroborate the details. Aaaaand, if you could use a little bit of extra prompting to take off on this not-to-be missed adventure, Muddy Boots will provide; just take a look.
If there’s no great demand for hanging on to launch ropes, do your feet a favor and dash around taking photos. Next thing you know, you’ve tucked a workout into your adventure that meets the rigorous standards of Dusty Car Muddy Boots.
Wing it over to Post Mills….
Post Mills? How you may ask? The airport, no less? Hint: the Post Mills airport is behind the Post Mills cemetery. Note the mini map below and find a bigger one. Orient yourself to the Town of Thetford, on the eastern side of VT, about smack dab half way up I-91 to Canada. Post Mills will jump off the page if you zoom in far enough.
6 am or 6 pm?
Did you figure out that balloons stay within range of chase vehicles (aka the rescue squad) when the wind is low? At dawn-ish or 6 pm-ish?
Balloons are scheduled to launch late afternoon on the Friday, dawn and evening on the Saturday, and dawn on the Sunday. Weather permitting.
You’ll be busy
Scamper around, have a sit, feast your eyes, enjoy the fiddling about with hot air and visualizing the nutty things that fly in the sky.
And if weird-o aero-machines don’t quite sate your appetite for ingenuity, how about a Vermontasaurus made out of a barn?
A stables with stalls especially for creative balloon baskets? The canoe version? The man-barbecue-with-beer set up? The flying bed? The aero-picnic-table?
A museum with spectator barber chairs, rows of old sewing machines, ski sculptures, go carts….
The ground at Post Mills Airport is uneven: sturdy shoes and trekking poles will be very welcome. And if you tire easily? Tote a lawn chair. You’ll need water and snacks, too.
All this creative energy, and you’ve worked up an appetite? Either settle in at the picnic table capped by a dead satellite dish, or drive on down to East Thetford. Yes, that’s by the banks of the Connecticut river.
Eat up at…
While you’re in the neighborhood…
