When you’re in Vermont, one way to find a wallet-friendly meal is to ask around for a diner. And, if you’re driving along the interstate, you’ll find some gems not far from an exit. There are always a many-options menu, local “color” in the form of specialty dishes and politics, plus potential for neighbor-sourced meat and vegetables. Chelsea Royal Diner: Eat Near I-91, Brattleboro VT
Muddy Boots can’t imagine how this diner got its name. It’s neither in Chelsea, nor remotely royal. Actually—and splendidly—it’s the kind of diner constructed from an old train boxcar, the kind that has a counter with swivel stools and booths with wonky benches.
So, no matter about the “royal” thing. If you’re close to Brattleboro VT, this is a great place to refuel a grumbling stomach without emptying your wallet. You’ll want Exit 2 off I-91 and then head west, along Route 9 (maybe signed Bennington or Manchester). Go approximately 3 miles. Just when your stomach is giving you hell because it thinks you got the directions all wrong, Chelsea Royal Diner will magically show up on the right.
Chelsea Royal Diner prides itself on serving nearby-sourced meat and vegetables, but also offers traditional diner fare. This compares favorably with the tripe treat an hour north at Windsor Diner. Next to the homemade maple cream pie at an I-91 truck stop two hours away? Close, but no cigar. Chelsea Royal Diner’s fresh and less greasy-spoonish choices are hard to beat anywhere.
Hurry up and get there! As of this writing, Chelsea Royal Diner is on the market. But since it’s very popular, a sale is likely to continue the tradition.
Check the hours
Before you leave the interstate, call for the hours. Many Vermont diners close in the early afternoon—Muddy Boots knows this from experience—which will exacerbate the stomach protests if you get there at the wrong time. Not the Chelsea Royal Diner, though, which serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Hmmmm, it also has a very popular homemade ice cream stand.
Plan to linger
Expect to linger a while at your fun’n’tasty Brattleboro VT diner. Diners aren’t fast food, but that’ll give you a chance to weigh the pros and cons of the daily specials on the blackboard, read the fine print on the paper placemat, and listen in on 5 conversations about the selectboard, listers, and volunteer fire chief.
