Sleep Somewhere Near I-94: Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore
Crazy as it may sound, just when traffic slows, jams, piles up, passes you to left and right, in the nether reaches of Chicagoland, slap in the middle of urban highway-spaghetti, there’s a National “Park”, Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore abutting Lake Michigan. Even crazier, it has a campground. Yes, indeedy, an NPS Campground practically next to Gary IN and just a hop off Interstate I-80 (I-90). AND I-94.
That means…National Park Senior Pass benefits!
The genius of this location is…..Where else are you going to camp? Save bucks in the hellzone of pricy and uncomfortable interstate motels? Aren’t the air mattress and homecooking just waaaaay more enticing?
Pack your bacon, blueberry pancake fixings, budget spaghetti, and gourmet coffee, and settle in for the night at Dunewood. There’s all kinds of stuff for relaxing even apart from the light-on-the-pocket book thing. There’s even a bonus Indiana Dunes State Park right next door to the National Lakeshore. You could scamper up a dune or two (great for the over-driven legs), take a tour of the 1933 World’s Fair homes, or get in a ranger talk on local botany.
Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore has…
All the perks of a National Park.
And then some. Get this: Dunewood Campground has showers. Unreal. Who’d have thunk a National Park facility with showers? Good ones, no less? Perky and clean? So, you’re done with a day of sweaty driving that’s brought you to the Lake Michigan old-steel-town hinterland and you not only get to relax, you get to clean up. Marvie.
Nothing to regret about going there, except, well maybe……it’s hard to find and even harder to get back to I-80. So, fortify yourself with primo Google directions and a large section of Google map before you wander around pot-holed surface roads and toll-booth interstates zooming entirely in the wrong direction. Experience is speaking here.
Relax, restore, refresh
Rest your weary eyes, dust yourself off, put up your feet, lie down a spell, everything you need to do to spunk up and get going on the next leg of your adventure. At Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
